New moon report Sivan 2012

Hi All.
I did not receive any observations reports from Monday. The moon was seen in Tuesday. In Israel the weather was not good as Roy Hoffman tells:
  I saw the Moon last night from Ma'ale Adummim. The sky was very hazy and the naked eye observation very difficult. The Moon was already visible with binoculars when I started at 19:46 and became visible to the naked eye at 20:02 till it faded at 20:06. It was still clearly visible with binoculars at 20:09 when I left. The weather conditions were 23½°C, RH34%, P 963 mbar.

  I enclose the written report and two photographs that show what a difference 13 minutes make. DSCF2315a.jpg was taken at 19:52 when the Moon could not be seen with the naked eye. Because I could not see it, I did not get it all in the frame. This picture required a lot of contrast enhancement and the partial crescent is very difficult to see. I might have been able to do better had I adjusted the exposure more carefully. However it does answer the question as to whether an 'invisible' Moon can be photographed with the kind of camera that we were discussing with Augustus yesterday. DSCF2324a.jpg shows the Moon at 20:05 and is not contrast enhanced. You can compare the two photographs with Photoshop by pasted the earlier one on top and adjusting the transparency. The crescents fit exactly.

Seen

The seeing of the new moon was harder than usual. Here are some of the reports:

=================================================
Brian and Linda Convery: It was difficult to see in the haze over the Mediterranean. We observed it for over 7 minutes until the haze once again darkened. It was a traditional smiley face as Linda would say. There were others from our party in Har Gilo but they could not see it from there.

================================================================
 The Crescent New Moon was sighted by me last evening at the beginning of Shabbat on the 23rd of March 2012 C.E. from Göteborg, but only through binoculars. When I arrived to my favourite point of observation at 18:34 local time (UT+1h), I could observe sunset in the western sky. The sky was mostly clear, but some clouds were close to the horizon in the west, alas. At 18:44, I suddenly found Tsedeq with my (8x30) binoculars, and when I looked higher up in the sky, I could see Nogah with unaided eyes at 18:45; possibly Nogah would had been visible some minutes earlier if I had looked in that direction. At 18:58 I found the very thin Chodesh with my binoculars, but it disappeared almost directly, into a thicker cloud. However, at 19:01 I found this thin Crescent again, and from that time it was visible most of the time, but only through binoculars, not with the unaided eye despite trying at many times. With the Chodesh sunking down, it came into the thickening haze above the horizon; therefore, I think, it was not visible without optical aid even when the sky was getting darker. At 19:05 I could see Tsedeq with unaided eyes, but it was not possible to see the Chodesh without binoculars; I tried and tried unto it set in low clouds, at 19:23. The orientation of this Chodesh was about "3 1/2" to "7 1/2". The temperature in the air was +9.0 degrees centigrade.

Yours sincerely,

Ariq Arar (Alef-Resh-Jod-Qof Ajin-Resh-Ajin-Resh)

Tom Rosenfeld:
I looked for the moon with my son Josh last night from Efrat, but it was not visible. We where looking between 6:15 and 6:30.

Tonight the moon was easy to see, even through the has. I started to look at about 6:15 and saw it right away.

Augustus Paul
     My search for this 23/03/2012 evening new moon of Abib began from 18:17 sunset and was successful at spotting it from 18:44 (27 minutes after sunset) and was later joined by Elder Thomas and his wife who through my assistance in them being able to spot it saw it for themselves at 18:55.
     Also seeing it together with the three of us was a gentle man standing not to far from us and overhearing our deleberation said it look just like a little baby.
     It was located north of where the sun set, tilting a bit to the north and not all that high above the horizon. Actually, it was lower than I'd expected, at the time (18:44) I began seeing it.
====================

If you have photos or videos of the new moon, feel free to send them,
Happy passover
